A compilation of texts which provide an overview of the historical and current debates surrounding Turkey’s identity and geopolitical position vis-à-vis Europe, in particular which competing conceptions of the ‘West’ can be found in Turkey’s twentieth and twenty-first century history. The forestalled entry of Turkey into the EU is considered as a key point of entry into the discussions (others include Kurdish independence, relations with Cyprus, and immigration). See in particular The Genesis of the Idea of Europe by Jean-Baptiste Duroselle and The Idea of Europe since 1945 by Alfred Grossler.
