Research Exhibitions function as modest sites of inquiry in which the meaning of the notion “former West” is negotiated with artists through their work. Experimental and speculative in nature, the Research Exhibitions examine the relationship between the changes ushered in by 1989 and the evolving nature of artistic practice; in particular, the ways in which the modes of artistic and knowledge production absorb the impulses of the societal developments, and vice-versa. Moreover, the Research Exhibitions—especially in the case of the solo projects—allow for new artistic productions to be realized and can be understood as testing grounds for the further development of the project as a whole.
