Turner considers debates about orientalism linked to postmodernism and the processes of globalization as well as the use of the notion of ‘the world’ in contemporary sociology and theory. In particular he analyzes the rise of religious fundamentalism and its ironic link to the progressive secularization of the western public sphere, which has accelerated, he argues, in the past two decades.
