Arguably the best known book of this enormously influential French philosopher, Discipline & Punish presents a radically new analysis of punishment in the West, from public torture to the modern prison. Foucault’s claim that state-sanctioned punishment has shifted from the prisoner’s body to his soul (via reeducation, rehabilitation programs, etc.) already contained the seeds of his notion of ‘biopower,’ which taken up and expanded upon by Foucault himself as well as many other philosophers, social scientists, etc. as paradigmatic of the contemporary condition.
