This ‘exhibition catalog’ (which is actually more like a short guide) accompanied the 3rd Berlin Biennale (14.2–18.4.2004), curated by Uta Meta Bauer. It took place in KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Martin-Gropius Bau, with a film program in Kino Arsenal. This volume of the catalog contains short texts on exhibited works, biographies of the artists, images, etc. The third iteration of the Biennale explicitly took the city’s division into East and West as its reference point, with a focus on works exploring the urban dynamics of Berlin’s artistic production, cityscape, various scenes, and increasing role as an international contemporary art metropolis. The exhibition was divided into so-called ‘hubs’: Migration, Urban Conditions, Sonic Scapes, Fashions and Scenes, and Other Cinemas (see Hito Steyerl’s short text on the Migration hub). Somewhat discounted at the time, in retrospect this iteration of the biennale has come to be seen as one of the more coherent considerations of Berlin’s locale and how art production functions within it. Exhibited artists included: Fernando Bryce, Banu Cennetoğlu, Florian Hecker, Melik Ohanian, Ulrike Ottinger, Mathias Poledna, Aura Rosenberg, Bojan Sarčević, Dierk Schmidt, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas, and Amelie von Wulffen.
