In the early nineties, one of the major turns in art discourses in the former West was a repositioning of the political in the art field. David Riff and Jalal Toufic discuss the renewed interest in modes of production in art and in the circulation of symbolic capital, the need to rethink the fundamentals of these activities from an ethical and political standpoint, and the reformulation of the role of the political in artistic practice, all on the backdrop of a growing interest in revisiting practices and ideas from (primarily) the sixties and seventies.
