Etienne Balibar (born 1942) is Professor Emeritus of Moral and Political Philosophy at Université de Paris X—Nanterre, Paris, and Distinguished Professor of Humanities, University of California, Irvine. He has recently lectured at institutions such as the New School for Social Research, New York; Northwestern University, Evanston; Calcutta Research Group, Calcutta; and Humanities Institute, Stony Brook University, New York. Among his central concerns are the problematics of European citizenship, the notion of the border, and violence and identity in politics. His many books include: Europe, Constitution, Frontière (2005); We, the People of Europe? Reflections on Transnational Citizenship (2004); Politics and the Other Scene (2002); and the groundbreaking Reading Capital (1965). Balibar lives and works in Paris and Irvine. [Last updated 2009]
